About the Best Multivitamin
My name is Dr. Sana. I see about forty patients every day in my clinic in Lahore. At least ten of them ask me about multivitamins. Most of them have bought something from a pharmacy or online and want to know if it is good. Others are tired all the time and hope a multivitamin will fix them. Let me give you my honest advice as a doctor. There is no single best multivitamin in Pakistan for everyone. But there is a best multivitamin for men, and a different one for women, and a different one for older adults. Let me explain.
When You Actually Need a Multivitamin
Most healthy people who eat a balanced diet do not need a multivitamin. Our food has enough nutrients if we eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, protein, and grains. But many people do not eat a balanced diet. Office workers who eat fast food every day. Elderly people who have lost their appetite. People with digestive problems. People recovering from illness. These people may benefit from a multivitamin.
The best multivitamin in Pakistan for a young man who eats home cooked food is different from the best multivitamin for men who are over fifty. Age matters. Activity level matters. Health conditions matter.
What to Look For in a Multivitamin for Men
If you are a man looking for a multivitamin, look for these four ingredients. Zinc for prostate health and immune function. At least 10 milligrams. Magnesium for muscle function and sleep. At least 100 milligrams. Vitamin D for bone health and mood. At least 1000 IU. B vitamins, especially B12, for energy. Avoid multivitamins with high iron. Men do not need extra iron unless they have a diagnosed deficiency.
The best multivitamin for men is not the most expensive one. I have seen expensive imported brands that have the same ingredients as a local brand costing half the price. I have also seen cheap multivitamins that have almost no active ingredients at all. You need a middle ground.
My Practical Advice
Do not go to a pharmacy and ask for the best multivitamin in Pakistan without knowing what you need. That is like asking for the best shoe without saying your size. First, ask yourself why you want a multivitamin. Are you tired? Are you not eating well? Do you have a specific deficiency?
If you are tired all the time, get a blood test first. You might have low vitamin D or low B12. Taking a multivitamin will not help if you need a higher dose of just one vitamin.
If you cannot get a blood test, choose a reputable brand from a known pharmaceutical company. Avoid brands that make wild claims on their packaging. "Miracle cure" and "instant energy" are red flags.
And please, do not take multiple supplements together without asking a doctor. Too much of some vitamins can be harmful. I once had a patient who was taking three different supplements, all containing vitamin D. His vitamin D level became toxic. He had kidney stones as a result.
A good multivitamin can help if you need it. But it is not candy. Take it seriously. And ask your doctor first.
